Quick start

1. Open a file: pick a JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, or PDF, or send one to Scrub from another app's share sheet.
2. Review the red boxes: each one marks something Scrub detected. Tap a box to select it, then use the on-screen controls to move, resize, or remove it; double-tap an empty area to add your own.
3. Pick a style: black bars, blur, or pixelation.
4. Tap Redact: Scrub destroys the content underneath and saves a new -scrubbed file. Your original is untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Is my data really private?

Yes. Everything happens on your device. Scrub has no servers and no account, collects no analytics, and never uploads your files. See the privacy policy.

Does redaction actually remove the information?

Yes, it's destructive. Scrub burns the redaction into the pixels (and, for PDFs, rebuilds the affected pages), so the hidden text or face can't be recovered from the saved file. It is not a black rectangle drawn on top.

Does it work offline?

Scrub always processes your files entirely offline. No image, PDF, or detected information ever leaves your iPhone. The one exception is a one-time setup download: on iPhones without Apple Intelligence, Scrub fetches a small, generic detection model from Apple the first time it needs it (that model file contains no personal data and none of your file content). After that, detection runs fully offline. iPhones with Apple Intelligence use Apple's built-in model and download nothing.

Where does the scrubbed file go?

Scrub creates a new file alongside your original (for example, IMG_1234-scrubbed.jpg) and lets you save or share it. The original is never overwritten.

After I save a scrubbed photo to Photos and reopen it, some metadata or a thumbnail is back. Is that a leak?

No. The file Scrub writes is clean: it removes the embedded thumbnail and the metadata you selected. But the iOS Photos library keeps and re-encodes its own copy. When you save a photo there and pick it again, Photos can hand back a re-processed version that it has re-stamped with standard, non-identifying EXIF (such as colour space, pixel dimensions, FlashpixVersion, and SceneCaptureType, written with default values) plus a freshly generated thumbnail. That thumbnail is built from the scrubbed image, so it shows the redacted result. The re-stamped tags carry none of your original data, so they reveal nothing you removed. To keep a byte-for-byte clean copy, save or share the scrubbed file to Files (or another app) instead of Photos.

My scrubbed PDF still shows a Producer and fresh dates in its file info. Is that a leak?

No. Every PDF records which software wrote it (the Producer) and when. When Scrub saves your redacted PDF it writes the file with Apple's built-in PDF engine, and that engine always stamps its own generic label (for example, iOS Version 26 Quartz PDFContext) and the save time into the new file. Nothing from the original carries over: the original producer, creation date, and modification date are destroyed in the copy Scrub writes, along with any title, author, or other fields you chose to remove. The stamps you see only say a PDF was saved on an iPhone at that time, which is true of any PDF exported from any Apple app. Scrub's File Info screen marks these fields as Replaced on save so you know what to expect.

Which files are supported?

JPEG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, and PDF.

What kinds of personal info can it detect?

Names, street addresses, emails, phone numbers, account and card numbers, and country-specific IDs and postal codes for the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, plus faces and barcodes/QR codes. Names and addresses are found by on-device AI; the rest by pattern matching. You can also add your own sensitive terms so Scrub always catches them. You review and adjust every detection before redacting.

Will Scrub catch everything automatically?

Treat Scrub as an assistant, not a guarantee. It detects likely personal information and shows each item as a box for you to review. You can dismiss, resize, or add detections before redacting. Detection is best effort, so always review the result and confirm the sensitive content is gone before you share the file. You decide what gets redacted.

Why does Scrub ask for photo access?

Only so it can read the image you choose and save the scrubbed copy back to your photo library. You can manage this in iOS Settings.
